ANTS

Ants are one of our most abundant insects. there are 7,600  species of ants that have been documented but their true numbers are closer to 12,000-14,000. Ants my infest homes and buildings  feeding on human food and certain ants  (Carpenter Ants) can cause Structural damage.Ants have three distinct castes, WORKERS, QUEENS, and MALES.  The Queen is the largest of the colony  and has wings but looses them after mating and is left with noticeable scars. The Males have wings, and their sole purpose is to mate with a Queen.  Workers  may  vary is size but are never winged.  When a colony is reproducing they are very active and you will notice many winged males and queens which are leaving the nest to mate.

Carpenter Ants

The Carpenter Ant  can cause structural damage to your home if they are left untreated for extended periods of time. They do not eat wood but rather remove quantities of it to enlarge their nest. Carpenter Ants usually nest in decaying wood but will expand their nest into structurally sound wood also. Most problems with these ants in Montana are caused from houses being built in forested areas where many parent colonies are usually dwelling in trees, stumps, and downed trees. workers many times will move into your home and start a satellite colony .The ants usually keep a trail between both colonies. Morning and evening is when they are most active but you will see them during the day also. A colony of 200-300 carpenter ants is at least 4-6 years old as they reproduce at a slow rate.
